The library offers a range of services for students, researchers, public administration and industry. Our holdings number some 900,000 items; books, periodicals and other materials. In addition the library provides access to 27,000 electronic journals, databases and reference works.
The National and University Library of Iceland is a research lending library where books can be borrowed for off-site use by holders of library cards. Materials that are only available for on-site use, i.e. manuscripts, items from the national collection and personal archives, can be consulted in our reading hall on the ground floor. Material not found in the library can often be provided through interlibrary loans.
Please note that opening hours differ for different service areas.
The library is open to everyone. Library cards can be issued to anyone with domicile in Iceland and an Icelandic ID No. (kennitala) and who is at least 18 years old. Library cards are issued free of charge to students and staff at the University of Iceland. Foreign students need to fill out a special application form.
Interlibrary Loans is a fee based service which obtains materials for study and research, such as books, theses, and periodical articles that are not otherwise available in the University of Iceland Library e-journals or the National consortia licences.
You can book group study rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors using our booking system. Rooms are for up to 6-10 people.
