The library is open to everyone. Library cards can be issued to anyone with domicile in Iceland and an Icelandic ID No. (kennitala) and who is at least 18 years old. Foreign nationals using the library for research purposes can apply for a temporary library card. Library cards are issued free of charge to students and staff at the University of Iceland. Foreign students need to fill out a special application form.
Applying for a library card
You apply for a library card at the circulation desk on the main floor of the library. You need to provide us with a valid identification containing a photograph and your ID No. See our prices for the annual fee. The library card can be renewed after a year provided the holder does not owe any overdue or lost material charges.
The card holder is held fully accountable for any material borrowed from the library. Overdue charges are applied after the loan period has expired (see prices).
