Icelandic Web Archive opens

Today the Icelandic minister of culture, research and education, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, formally launched the Icelandic Web Archive, vefsafn.is, providing public access to the most comprehensive collection of Icelandic web pages in the world. The collection comprises most web pages published under the top-level domain .is and several other Icelandic pages published on other domains.

The National and University Library of Iceland is the first national library to offer open public access to its complete web archive. It has collected Icelandic web pages since 2004 in accordance with the law on legal deposit from 2003 which stated that web publication should be treated like any other form of publication and preserved by the library. The technology used was developed by the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) of which the library is a founding member. It is similar to the system used by the well-known Internet Archive which has been collecting web pages from all over the world since 1996.
