The National and University Library of Iceland currently holds almost a million copies of various kinds. These are arranged according to the Dewey classification system. They are also registered in the national OPAC (library system) at Leitir.is.
Academic works, fiction and general works in various languages are mostly found on the 4th (top) floor. There you can also find a textbooks collection: works reserved for use in various courses at the University of Iceland.
On the 2nd floor, where the entrance is, there is a special reference section with handbooks and reference works with computers for looking up in Leitir.is. The information desk provides further information about library holdings and assists users.
On the 1st floor (going down the staircase) there is the Icelandic collection and the manuscript collection. There is a reading hall for on-site consultation of the holdings, which include almost all works printed in Iceland, including posters and various kinds of small print, a map collection and manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 20th century.
Electronic access to the full text of textbooks and academic works is becoming ever more important. Our list of electronic resources has links to both subscribed and open-access resources available to library users.
