The week October 19-23 is dedicated to Open Access in research libraries all over the world. Its purpose is to increase awareness of the need for open access to scientific knowledge on the Internet. A large part of scientific material and research findings are currently only available by payment. The research behind these materials is often publicly funded but they remain inaccessible and therefore not as useful as they could be.
The OA week is celebrated in various ways. In Denmark a webpage has been launched about Open Access http://www.open-access.dk.There Internet users can find a wealth of information about Open Access, the Open Access policies of Danish universities and much more. The web was set up by the association of Danish electronic professional and research libraries DEFF (Danmarks Elektroniske Fag- og Forskningsbibliotek) .
