Jón Bjarnason´s natural science manuscript

The manuscript ÍBR 69 4to is a part of the encyclopaedic collection of farmer Jón Bjarnason (1791-1861) from Þórormstunga in Austur-Húnavatnssýsla, which he collected in the middle of the nineteenth century.  The collection, which is in 9 volumes (ÍBR 67-73 4to and ÍBR 69-70 8vo), includes detailed information about the fauna and flora, foreign cultures, astronomy, technological inventions and much more which Jón gathered from various domestic and foreign works. One of the volumes (ÍBR 69 4to) is richly illustrated, either with pictures which Jón cut out from various works and coloured, or pictures that he drew himself. A selection from this work by Jón will appear soon in the series Sýnisbók íslenskrar alþýðumenningar edited by Árni H. Kristjánsson and Sigurður Gylfi Magnússon. Árni introduced its content on October 1st in the lecture series Íslensk bóksaga which takes place this winter in the National and University Library of Iceland on the first Wednesday of each month.
