Halldór Laxness

Barn náttúrunnar (Child of Nature]

Barn náttúrunnar is the first novel by Halldór Kiljan Laxness (1902-1998), written when he was just 16 years old. It tells the love story of Hulda, an erratic country girl and Randver, a wealthy western Icelander who lived in Canada. In order to live up to his ideals Randver decided to abandon his job as a real-estate agent and return to Iceland to become a farmer. He yearns for a simple and diligent life, whereas Hulda longs for the opportunity to travel around the world with her wealthy boyfriend. When she learns of his intentions she leaves him, but in the end they are reunited. Some scholars claim that in Barn náttúrunnar we find the essence of everything Laxness wrote later.

On the occasion of the centennary of Barn náttúrunnar an exhibition was opened in the library where the book is on display.
