Jón Árnason – 200 years

On Saturday, September 7, it was commemorated that 200 years have passed since the birth of Jón Árnason National Librarian and collector of Icelandic folk legends. Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir Minister of Education and Culture, presented a speech and unveiled a relief of Jón Árnason in the lobby of the National Library by sculptor Helgi Gíslason. After that there was a symposium in the Library on Jón Árnason where Soffía Auður Birgisdóttir, Arndís Hulda Auðunsdóttir, Hólmfríður K. Gunnarsdóttir, Bragi Þorgrímur Ólafsson, Romina Werth and Helga Kress gave speeches as well as Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverrisdóttir National Librarian. Örn Hrafnkelsson chaired the seminar.

At the conclusion of the seminar, an exhibition on the life and work of Jón Árnason was opened, showing manuscripts, letters and printed books. Halldóra Kristinsdóttir, Guðrún Laufey Guðmundsdóttir, Bragi Þorgrímur Ólafsson and Jökull Sævarsson took care of the selection of exhibits and the writing of exhibition texts and Ólafur J. Engilbertsson designed the exhibition and the catalog. Furthermore, a revision of the website jonarnason.is was opened, created by Olga Holownia.
