Advertisements of Jørgen Jørgensen from 1809

The library´s highlights in July are two of the advertisements of Jørgen Jørgensen who took part in a coup in Iceland in the summer of 1809. The first advertisement, dated June 26, 1809, declared the country's independence: "Iceland is free from the Danish State".

The advertisement from June 26, 1809 can be seen here.

In the second, which is from July 11 of the same year, Jørgensen declares that he has taken rule of the country, but only "until a regular national government is decided".

The advertisement from July 11, 1809 can be seen here.

Jørgensen was accompanied by the Brithish soap merchant Samuel Phelps and others on the ship Margaret & Anne. They tried to get a license to trade in Iceland, but the governor Count Trampe did not permit Icelanders to trade with the merchant.  With the help of other crew members, Jørgensen managed to arrest the governor Trampe and the crew took all power in Iceland into their own hands. Phelps entrusted his interpreter, Jørgensen, with the administration of the country while conducting his own business. Jørgensen was a great visionary that wanted to rule in the spirit of the ideas that prevailed in Europe in the wake of the American and French revolutions. But the "Icelandic revolution" did not last long and in the second half of August Jørgensen was deposed and all his advertisements and actions were annulled.

The advertisements are on the exhibition Print, manuscripts, and private archives currently on display in the library.
