On September 3, a century has passed since the birth of Björn Th. Björnsson, art historian and writer. Björn was the first Icelandiv Art historian and was a pioneer in the study of Icelandic art. He was a popular lecturer and taught many art history courses at the University of Iceland for over two decades. Björn Th. Björnsson was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon for his work in 1994. In addition to publications on Icelandic art, Björn wrote several historical novels and plays. Most of Björnsson's main works in the field of fiction are preserved in the library´s Manuscript Department. Among them is Virkisvetur, Björnsson's first novel, which won first prize in the Council of Education's novel competition in 1959. Gunnlaugur Scheving made the book cover, preserved at the library´s Icelandic National Collection.
