Hlaupvídd sex (Calibre six) by Sigurður Pálsson – a poster from the Student´s Theatre

The SÁL Theatre School operated from 1972-1975. At that time there was no performing arts school in Iceland after the National Theatre and the Reykjavík Theatre Company closed their school to pressure the state to open a state-run drama school. In the summer of 1972 a group of young people who had become impatient after the opening of a new school had a meeting, and as a result the Association for Theatre studies (SÁL) was established and the school opened in the autumn. The school was run by the students themselves who looked to Nordic ideas to construct the curriculum. After a three-year struggle, the Icelandic Theatre School was opened in 1975. A large proportion of the SÁL students were admitted to the school. Within the school, the Student´s  theatre was established, one of the major struggles of the SYL students.

The play Hlaupvídd Sex (Calibre six) was written especially by author Sigurdur Pálsson for the Student´s  Theater at the Icelandic Theatre School and premiered in 1977, directed by Þórhildur Þorleifsdóttir. They were both teachers at the SÁL school. A large part of the group were students from the second class. The poster was designed by Ásta Ólafsdótttir.

An exhibition marking 50 years since the founding of the SÁL Theatre School will open in the library in October.
