The National and University Library of Iceland and Iceland Music Sign Collaboration Agreement on the Preservation of Icelandic Musical Works

20.12.2024

The collaboration agreement between the National and University Library of Iceland and Iceland Music marks an important milestone in the preservation of Icelandic music. With the signing of this agreement, the steps previously taken towards ensuring the long-term preservation of Iceland Music’ original materials are now formalised but The National and University Library of Iceland has been safeguarding them since 2009.

The objectives of the collaboration agreement are threefold:

The legal deposit of published works by composers will be properly directed to the National and University Library of Iceland, which Iceland Music facilitates by assigning ISMN numbers, and arrangements must be made regarding how access to these materials will be managed.

The continued preservation of Iceland Music’s musical manuscripts—original materials—will be ensured at the National and University Library of Iceland.

Musical manuscripts currently held by Iceland Music and are in the public domain must be transferred to the National and University Library of Iceland for preservation.

The significance of this collaboration:
This agreement lays the foundation for the preservation of Icelandic musical works. It not only ensures that these works are not lost but also that they remain accessible for research in the future. It strengthens the role of both the National and University Library and Iceland Music as key institutions in the preservation and promotion of Icelandic culture.

This step reflects an increased emphasis on safeguarding Icelandic cultural heritage, ensuring it is preserved and made accessible for future generations.
