And his wife

Exhibition in the National Library

10.02.2025 - 14.02.2025

The exhibition And his wife is organized by Equality Days at the University of Iceland and the Women's History Archives at the National Library of Iceland - University Library.

The exhibition is in the lobby of the National Library from 10.-14. February.  There are photographs from the collection of the Women's History Archives together with text works and clippings.

The sound work And his wife by Eiríkur Stephensen and Margrét Kristín Blöndal will also be played at lunchtime every day, but it is one of four works that belonged to the sound installation Soundtrack of death that was installed in Hólavellir cemetery on the 19.-22. August 2023.

The work is inspired by the well-known inscription "...and his wife" - which was common on tombstones in the past and was descriptive of the status of women. The work ends with a funeral psalm dedicated to men with first names, family names and job titles… and their wives.
