Women’s History Archives

The Women’s History Archives (Kvennasögusafn Íslands) were founded on the initiative of Anna Sigurðardóttir, together with Svanlaug Baldursdóttir and Else Mia Einarsdóttir, at Anna’s home at Hjarðarhagi 26 on 1 January 1975, to mark the United Nations’ International Women’s Year.

The aim of the Women’s History Archives is to record, preserve and collect sources on women’s history, to share that knowledge and to encourage research. They are the only archives of their kind in Iceland. In 1996 the Archives became a separate unit of the National and University Library of Iceland in Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3. They are on the 1st floor of the building. At the Archives you can get information about women’s history and hand in documents. Material from the Archives is for use in the National Collection Reading Room on the 1st floor of Þjóðarbókhlaða. You can order material by calling 525 5779, by e-mailing kvennasogusafn (at) landsbokasafn.is or in person.
