The Library’s reference area on the 2nd floor holds reference works of many kinds: encyclopaedias, dictionaries, Alþingistíðindi (the parliamentary records), Stjórnartíðindi (the official gazette), collections of laws and court rulings such as the Icelandic Lagasafn (the statute book) and Hæstaréttardómar (the rulings of the Supreme Court), atlases, bibliographies and reference works in various specialist fields.
The 3rd and 4th floors also have the most common dictionaries and other reference works, for use there. The Audio-visual Collection on the 4th floor has a good collection of reference works on music.
The reading room on the 1st floor has reference collections related to the material of the Manuscript Collection and the National Collection.
The law library in Lögberg, the Faculty of Law’s building, has reference works in the field of law.
In addition, reference works and dictionaries are available online: in open access, through the Iceland Consortium for Electronic Subscriptions, or in the Library’s and the University of Iceland’s own subscriptions.
