The map collection of the National and University Library of Iceland holds the great majority of the maps of Iceland that have ever been published. Most of them come to the Library under the legal deposit act. Most maps published before the middle of the last century can be found on the website islandskort.is.
The main Icelandic maps are the maps of the country made by Danish surveyors at the beginning of the 20th century (the General Staff maps, herforingjaráðskortin), the British and American military maps from the middle of the 20th century (the AMS maps), and the publications of the National Land Survey of Iceland and other publishers. The map collection also has a large library (over 600 volumes) on maps and map-making, given to it by Haraldur Sigurðsson and his wife Sigrún Á. Sigurðardóttir. It includes reprints of the atlases of the leading map-makers of earlier centuries, works by respected scholars in the field and the main journals on maps.
