Lárus Sigurbjörnsson’s Drama Collection

In 1993 the children of Lárus Sigurbjörnsson (1903–1974), former archivist and keeper of antiquities for the City of Reykjavík, bequeathed his whole collection of plays to the National and University Library of Iceland, and it was moved to the Library for safekeeping in 1995. Lárus was in many ways one of the pioneers of Icelandic theatre in the 20th century, and he collected everything to do with the history of the theatre. His collection holds not only the manuscripts of nearly all the Icelandic and translated plays staged in Iceland in his lifetime, but also dramatic literature, theatre programmes, cuttings from Icelandic and foreign newspapers and much else connected with the theatre.
