Watson Collection

The Briton and friend of Iceland Richard Mark Watson (1906–1979) bequeathed his library of books in foreign languages about Iceland and Icelandic subjects to the National Library of Iceland (now the National and University Library of Iceland) in 1975. Among the works in the collection are the complete works of William Morris and many rare travel books, which make the collection unique. It also holds many books about the Faroe Islands. Mark Watson was well known in Iceland for his interest in Icelandic animals; among other things he gathered information about the Icelandic dog, and the results can be found in his book The Iceland dog 874–1956. The Watson Animal Hospital was his gift to the Icelandic nation. He also gave the National Museum of Iceland more than a hundred watercolours by W. G. Collingwood.
