The exhibition Og kona hans (And His Wife) is organised by Equality Days at the University of Iceland and the Women’s History Archives at the National and University Library of Iceland.
The exhibition is in the foyer of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3, from 10 to 14 February. It shows photographs from the Women’s History Archives together with text works and press cuttings.
Every day at lunchtime the sound work Og kona hans by Eiríkur Stephensen and Margrét Kristín Blöndal will also be played at the exhibition. It is one of four works that formed part of the sound installation Hljóðrás dauðans (Soundtrack of Death), set up in Hólavallagarður cemetery on 19–22 August 2023.
The work is inspired by the well-known inscription “…og kona hans” (…and his wife), which was common on gravestones in earlier times and spoke of the position of women. It ends with a funeral hymn dedicated to men with first names, family names and job titles… and their wives.
