An information and media literacy week will be held in Iceland for the first time on 13–17 February 2023. The week is organised by TUMI (Tengslanet um upplýsinga- og miðlalæsi, the network for information and media literacy), with grants from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and from Sóley, a fund run by the Association of Local Authorities in the Capital Area. The National and University Library of Iceland is represented in the network by Hilma Gunnarsdóttir, a specialist.
During the week, new teaching material on media literacy for the middle years of compulsory school (years 5–7) will be launched and made available to every school in the country. It consists of six short educational videos on media literacy. Each video comes with discussion points and teaching guidelines to help teachers talk with their pupils about responsible use of phones and the internet.
One of the highlights of the week is a symposium on information and media literacy at Gróska on Thursday 16 February, 9:00–12:00. Among other things, the symposium will have a panel discussion on media literacy from various angles, in which National Librarian Ingibjörg S. Sverrisdóttir is one of the participants. Registration for the symposium and information about the week can be found here (in Icelandic).
On the website of the Media Commission (Fjölmiðlanefnd) you can read more about media literacy and the network (in Icelandic).
