Icelandic book history: talk on 7 October

On Wednesday 7 October Halldóra Kristinsdóttir and Sigríður Hjördís Jörundsdóttir will give the talk “On the margins of society: outsiders in the Manuscript Collection” in the lecture series Íslensk bóksaga (Icelandic Book History), held in the lecture hall of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3, 12:05–12:45.

The abstract of the talk says:

“In summer 2013 an exhibition called Utangarðs? (Outsiders?) was held in Þjóðarbókhlaða. It described the lives and work of about thirty people who in one way or another did not fit into the society they lived in. The exhibition was based on research that Halldóra Kristinsdóttir and Sigríður Hjördís Jörundsdóttir carried out on the holdings of the Manuscript Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland, and its aim was to bring to light manuscripts connected with outsiders. After the exhibition, Halldóra and Sigríður began writing a book on the subject, which is expected in bookshops at the beginning of November. It tells the story of outsiders in West Iceland and the Westfjords and links it to the holdings of the Manuscript Collection.

The talk will describe various manuscripts connected with the subject,  as many interesting things came to light when the manuscript stores were searched. It will present manuscripts written by outsiders, letters they received, documents connected with them and diaries they wrote.”

Everyone welcome

The lecture series is funded by the Research Fund of Sigrún Á. Sigurðardóttir and Haraldur Sigurðsson.
