The Audio-visual Collection is on the 4th floor of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3. It keeps, and gives access to, the published Icelandic sound recordings and films that the Library receives through legal deposit, objects and photographs from Icelandic musicians, and interviews from the Centre of Oral History. You can listen to some of the recordings in Hljóðsafn, hljodsafn.is. Films are also available for loan.
Sound recordings
Under the Icelandic Legal Deposit Act, the National and University Library is to receive for preservation all sound recordings published in Iceland: three copies of material published in a physical format, and copying access to online publications. The purpose is twofold: the permanent preservation of published sound recordings, and access to Icelandic cultural heritage.
Films
The Audio-visual Collection has a selection of Icelandic and foreign educational and feature films that can be borrowed for three days. Films that are not for loan can be watched in the Library.
Donations
The Audio-visual Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland accepts donations that strengthen its collections and are in line with its acquisitions policy. If you want to donate material to the Collection, you need to contact one of the Library’s contacts first.
