This almanac, printed at Hólar in 1597, is the oldest that has survived in Iceland. Its contents were most probably compiled by Arngrímur Jónsson, at the request of Bishop Guðbrandur Þorláksson. The almanac is perpetual: it could be used for many years in a row. Among other things it contains a four-line verse by Ólafur Guðmundsson that teaches the number of days in each month. Young children in Iceland are still taught this verse today to remember the number of days in the months.
