According to a new reading survey by the Icelandic Literature Center (Miðstöð íslenskra bókmennta), published today on Icelandic Language Day, about half the nation went to a library or used a library’s online services over the past year. Women use library services more often than men. A large majority of Icelanders think it is important that Icelandic literature has access to public support. The use of audiobooks has risen considerably, while the reading of printed books has fallen. Books are popular as gifts, and novels are the most popular reading in every age group.
A fuller account of the survey’s results is on the website of the Icelandic Literature Center (in Icelandic).
