Interlibrary loans

The Library obtains books and journal articles for its users from other university and research libraries. Books are not ordered from Reykjavík City Library or the public libraries in the capital area. Please note too that the library of Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament) and the ministries’ libraries lend books for use in their reading rooms only. Books that are available in the Library are not supplied as interlibrary loans, except to other libraries.

Full instructions on how to order material are in the guide Interlibrary loans  (in Icelandic).

Waiting time and due dates

The waiting time varies a great deal, from a few days to several weeks, depending on where the material comes from. Articles generally take two days, books at least a week. Books obtained from abroad are usually due back after three to four weeks. Teachers and staff of the University of Iceland receive articles by internal mail; students and other users collect their articles from the loans service desk. Everyone collects books from the service desk.

Libraries in Iceland

Libraries in Iceland can order interlibrary loans from the Library, either in the library system Gegnir or by e-mail to millisafnalan (at) landsbokasafn.is.

Interlibrary loan fees

Interlibrary loans are charged according to the fees. Costs for the teaching and research of University of Iceland staff are charged to the account of the faculty, institute or research project concerned and invoiced twice a year. Invoices to companies and institutions are sent out quarterly.
