Library Day, 9 September

Library Day will be held in Iceland for the third time on Monday 9 September. This time the day is linked to International Literacy Day, which falls on 8 September every year. The theme of the day is “Lestur er bestur – spjaldanna á milli” (Reading is best – from cover to cover). Over 100 libraries  are taking part, and many of them  will have a programme or something out of the ordinary.

The website www.bokasafn.is, with information on the country’s libraries, will be launched, and a list of the best reference books in the opinion of library staff will also be presented.

The National and University Library of Iceland offers visitors a giveaway table of books and screenings of the films Landsbókasafn 150 ára (The National Library at 150), made in 1968, and Þjóðarbókhlaða from 1990.  Next year the Library celebrates its 20th anniversary, and in 2018 it will be 200 years since the National Library was founded. The screenings will be in the Library’s lecture hall  at 11:00–12:00 and 14:00–15:00.

Welcome.
