Þuluvafningur (a scroll with a þula)

New acquisitions of various kinds come to the Library regularly. On 25 June 2012 the Library was given a scroll with Sigurður Nordal’s Þula (a traditional rhyming chant) in his own hand. He gave the þula to Theodóra Thoroddsen as a token of their friendship.

Sigurður wrote the þula on a long sheet, rolled it up and tied a beautiful blue silk ribbon round it. The sheet on which the þula is written measures 107 × 11 cm.

The þula begins:
Gekk ég upp á hamarinn,
sem hæst af öllum ber,
hamingjuna hafði ég,
í hendi mér.
(I walked up onto the crag that rises highest of all; I held happiness in my hand.)

At the bottom of the sheet you can clearly see that glue has been put on it, and it can also be seen on the ribbon itself, so Sigurður glued the sheet to the ribbon.
