Witchcraft verdicts, diaries and women’s poetry in the nineteenth century: three new books from the Manuscript Collection presented

On Tuesday 19 October three recent books, based to a greater or lesser extent on the holdings of the Manuscript Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland, will be presented.

Már Jónsson, Professor of History at the University of Iceland, will talk about his two-volume work Galdur og guðlast á 17. öld (Witchcraft and Blasphemy in the 17th Century), which contains the verdicts in witchcraft cases in Iceland that survive in manuscripts and documents.

Guðrún Ingólfsdóttir, visiting scholar at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, will talk about the book Skáldkona gengur laus (A Woman Poet on the Loose). Its blurb says that in the book “four women poets of the 19th century are let loose from the manuscript stores of Þjóðarbókhlaða so that they can renew their message to the world.”

Davíð Ólafsson, Lecturer at the University of Iceland’s School of Humanities, will talk about his book Frá degi til dags (From Day to Day), on diary writing in Iceland from 1720–1920, which also includes a detailed list of the diaries kept in the Library’s Manuscript Collection.

The chair will be Bragi Þorgrímur Ólafsson, head of the Manuscript Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland.

The event takes place in the lecture hall of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3, from 12:00–13:00.

Everyone is welcome!
