Tímanna safn 1818–2018, Thursday 6 December: “Raw material and stories: on Steindór Sigurðsson at the National and University Library of Iceland”

On Thursday 6 December the historian and poet Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir will give the talk “Raw material and stories: on Steindór Sigurðsson at the National and University Library of Iceland” in the lecture series Tímanna safn (Collection of the Ages), held to mark the 200th anniversary of the National and University Library of Iceland.

In her talk Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir will discuss the Library as a place for historical research and communication, a varied place of both raw material and history. From what raw material is history, or are histories, made, and how do they come about? What decides which stories are told, and how? What part does the Library play in that process? These questions will be discussed in the light of the story of the writer Steindór Sigurðsson (1901–1949), whose presence will be sought on different shelves of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3. Steindór is best known for his pamphlets about “ástandið” (the “Situation”, relations between Icelandic women and foreign soldiers) during the Second World War, but he left many other works, such as crime novels and romances, poems and memoirs.

The talk will be given in the lecture hall of Þjóðarbókhlaða, 12:05–12:45.

Everyone is very welcome.
