SG-hljómplötur at 50

It is now 50 years since the record company SG-hljómplötur was founded. To mark the occasion, a small exhibition has been set up in the Library. SG-hljómplötur was the record company of the musician and broadcaster Svavar Gests (1926–1996), who founded it in 1964. In the 20 years it operated, the company released 80 small 45 rpm records and 180 large 33 rpm long-playing (LP) records. The contribution of Svavar Gests and SG-hljómplötur to Icelandic music history is invaluable. Thanks to the label, works by artists that would otherwise have been lost have been preserved. The SG-hljómplötur catalogue includes various bands, solo singers, choirs, comedy, folk songs, Christmas recordings, plays, children’s songs, poetry readings and rímur (Icelandic narrative verse).
