Jón Jónsson Borgfirðingur

A small exhibition on the book collector, scholar and police officer Jón Jónsson Borgfirðingur (1826–1912) has opened on the 1st floor of Þjóðarbókhlaða, the library building at Arngrímsgata 3. In the middle of the nineteenth century Jón collected books and manuscripts from all over the country with great diligence, and they later found their way to the National and University Library of Iceland. Through his collecting he gained valuable knowledge of Icelandic book history, and many scholars, both Icelandic and foreign, turned to him for information on Icelandic books, newspapers and journals. He also compiled works in that field, which are on show in the exhibition along with various objects kept by his descendants. The exhibition runs until late November.
