On Halldór Laxness' birthday, April 23, the exhibition To Be Kind or Go Away? opened. The occasion is the centennial of The Child of Nature, Halldór's first novel.

The exhibition is a collaborative project between the National and University Library of Iceland, Gljúfrastein, Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature and the Publishing House. The Museum Council and the Friends of Gljúfrastein support the project.

A large number of people attended the opening. In addition to the National Librarian, speeches were given by writer Pétur Gunnarsson, Unnur Guðjónsdóttir, who presented audio recordings of an interview with Laxness, Haukur Ingvarsson, the author of the exhibition, and Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Culture, who opened the exhibition. Þorgerður Ása Aðalsteinsdóttir sang several songs to Laxness's poems and played the guitar.
