The family of university lecturer Jón Rúnar Gunnarsson has presented the National Library of Iceland – University Library with a generous gift of books from his collection. Jón studied in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Norway and completed a mag. art. degree in Indo-European comparative linguistics and a cand. mag. degree in ancient Greek and Latin. He was an assistant professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Oslo for several years before being appointed assistant professor of general linguistics at the University of Iceland in 1975. He was the first teacher to be appointed full-time in the field and participated in its development. He wrote a number of academic articles and was involved in translations, including Vaclav Havel's plays from Czech. Jón worked, along with others, on a new translation of the Bible and the books that the National Library of Iceland – University Library has received as a gift are related to his work. They will be accessible at the museum and will strengthen the collection's collection in the field of biblical research and translation. Jón died in October 2013.
