The Association's Book Donation ´78

    The Association's Book Donation ´78

On Tuesday, September 23, Samtökin '78 presented a book donation to the Gender Studies Program and the National and University Library of Iceland at a ceremony in the National Library's lecture hall. The donation took place on Bi Visibility Day, which is an initiative of Samtökin '78 to raise awareness of the issues of bisexual, pansexual, and fluid people and to celebrate the role and contribution of this group in the history and culture of queer people.

The '78 Society is at a crossroads, but now in the fall the society is moving to a new home at Suðurgata 3 in Reykjavík – after years of living at Laugavegur 3. At this juncture, at the society's general meeting in March 2014, it was unanimously agreed to dissolve the part of the society's library that concerns the collection of non-fiction books and novels. It was also decided to donate the non-fiction books to the gender studies program at the University of Iceland – for loan at the National Library – University Library. This involves over 1,000 titles, foreign non-fiction books concerning the life and culture of queer people, as well as fiction. Professor Þorgerður Einarsdóttir, coordinator of the gender studies program, accepted the gift from Hilmar Magnússon, chairman of the '78 Society.
