Personal papers of Jóna Margrét Tómasdóttir

Personal papers of Jóna Margrét Tómasdóttir

A national campaign is currently underway to collect women's documents. The Manuscript Collection of the National and University Library of Iceland, the National Archives of Iceland, the Icelandic Women's History Museum and regional archives across the country want to use the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage to draw attention to the fact that women's documents end up in museums to a much lesser extent than men's documents.

The private archives of Jóna Margrét Tómasdóttir (1913-2005) are one of the collections that have come to the manuscript collection through the collection effort. Jóna Margrét was a housewife in Reykjavík and also worked as a seamstress.

The collection contains various poems by Jóna Margrét and others. Much of it is written on various types of notes. The collection also contains notebooks that Jóna Margrét has used to keep track of sewing courses that she has given. There is also a travel diary, letters and a talk entitled "When I got into the situation". The talk was given at Hotel Saga on April 19, 1991 and tells the story of Icelandic women's encounters with American soldiers.

Among the items currently on display in a small exhibition at the museum is a diary from 1991 in which Jóna Margrét has written verses for each day. Over the next few weeks, the diary will be flipped so that it will be possible to read a verse for each day.
