The National Library of Iceland – University Library recently became a member of a European project entitled “Europeana – Newspapers”. The purpose of the project is to collect information on the digital reproduction of newspapers and magazines and their dissemination, to use the latest computer technology to improve searches in light-readable text, to use the latest methods for analyzing content and to use the latest technology for publishing. The work being done includes, in addition to what search engines usually do, for example, finding titles and words or phrases in text, teaching people and places in text, better delimiting articles and text in newspapers, better processing and standardization of metadata handling and preservation issues. The library’s participation in the project consists of attending workshops related to the project, meetings about the implementation of the project and the possibility of adding the National Library’s material to the database.
