    The Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies is holding a symposium, which was scheduled for February 10th, but had to be postponed due to bad weather forecast for that day, under the title

     

    Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) – great poet and scientist

     

    in the National Library, lecture hall on the 2nd floor,

    Saturday, February 24, 2018.

     

    The symposium begins at 1:30 PM and ends no later than 4:15 PM.

     

    Four talks will be given as follows:

     

    Reception of Goethe's works until the end of the 19th century

    Gísli Magnússon , Associate Professor of Danish at the University of Iceland

     

    Icelandic translations of Goethe's works

    Gauti Kristmannsson , professor of translation studies at the University of Iceland

     

    COFFEE BREAK

     

    On Goethe's botany, the simplicity of plants, and aesthetics in science

    Þóra Ellen Þórhallsdóttir , professor at the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Iceland

     

    The spectrum of emotions. A few words about Goethe's color theory

    Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson , art historian

     

    Moderator: Ingi Sigurðsson, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Iceland 

     

    The presentation of each talk takes about 20 minutes.

    About 10 minutes will be given for questions and discussion after each presentation.

     

    During the break, refreshments will be served in front of the lecture hall.
