The founding meeting of the Icelandic Feminist Association was held on March 14, 2003 in the building of Miðbæjarskólinn. At a follow-up founding meeting two weeks later, on April 1, the association was formally founded and a council was elected and groups were established. Each working group has a specific focus, which means that the association touches on as many areas of gender inequality as possible. The councilwoman of each group sits on the council (a kind of board) of the association along with its spokesperson. The current spokesperson is Steinunn Rögnvaldsdóttir.
