Gifts

The National and University Library of Iceland accepts donations that strengthen its collection and are in accordance with its acquisition policy. Those who wish to make gifts to the library must, before doing so, contact the library's contact persons. There are considerable costs involved in receiving, cataloging and storing collection materials, and therefore care must be taken to ensure that the received material will be useful to its visitors. The lbrary accepts Icelandic and Iceland-related material if it does not already exist or if additional copies are needed. The library also accepts material that strengthens its collection in the fields of study of the University of Iceland or is useful to the Icelandic research community.

Donor disposition

The museum reserves the right to treat gifts as other collection items and to dispose of them as it wishes. The same rules regarding use, placement, and preservation apply to gifts and other materials. In the case of large donations, the museum will select from the materials. If the material is very specialized, an expert is often called in to assist with the selection. When handing over gifts, donors can request to retrieve any publications that are not accepted into the museum within a certain period of time. After that period, the museum will dispose of the books elsewhere. Donors can request a list of the materials accepted into the museum.

Receiving donations

Gifts are most commonly delivered informally, except in special cases. In such cases, formal delivery may be arranged between the donor and the museum. In all cases, the contact person for receiving gifts should be contacted.
