Reykjavík Drama Association's drama school data handed over

Reykjavík Drama Association's drama school data handed over

On January 11, 2023, the Theatre Museum received a remarkable gift from former students and teachers of the Reykjavík Theatre Society's drama school. This kind group bequeathed to the Theatre Museum various documents related to the school's activities. The ceremony took place in the National Library's lecture hall on the founding day of the Reykjavík Theatre Society, which is currently celebrating its 126th anniversary.

The Reykjavík Theatre Company's drama school operated for about a decade, 1959-1969. Gísli Halldórsson was the school's principal for the time being, but Sveinn Einarsson later took over and led the school until its closure. Towards the end of the 1960s, the school was closed down to pressure the then government to open a state-run drama school.

Eight classes graduated from the school and for a time both a beginner and advanced department were run. Among the students were Pétur Einarsson, Nína Björk Árnadóttir, Hákon Waage, Edda Þórarinsdóttir, Þórunn Sigurðardóttir, Jón Hjartarson and Þorsteinn Gunnarsson. Teachers included; Helgi Skúlason, Steindór Hjörleifsson, Helga Bachmann, Jón Sigurbjörnsson and Þórhildur Þorleifsdóttir. The curriculum was diverse, including gesture acting, acting, facial make-up, voice acting and singing.

The collection contains many interesting items such as photographs, curriculum vitae, student certificates and teacher reviews, but also play lists, clippings and payment slips for school fees, which were 1000 krónur per month in 1967 or almost 20,000 krónur at today's prices.

Cataloging of the collection is underway and the data bear the collection number LMÍ 2023/1.
