The museum's reference room on the 2nd floor contains reference books and reference works of various kinds: encyclopedias, dictionaries, the Althingi Gazette, the Government Gazette, law and court collections, such as the Icelandic Collection of Laws and Supreme Court Judgments, atlases, bibliographies and reference works in various fields.

The 3rd and 4th floors also contain the most common dictionaries and other reference books for use there. The music and video library on the 4th floor has a good collection of reference books on music.

The reading room on the 1st floor contains reference collections related to the contents of the manuscript collection and the Icelandic National Museum.

The law library in Lögberg has reference books in the field of law.

In addition, reference books and dictionaries are available in electronic form; in open access, National Access or in special subscriptions of the museum and the University of Iceland.
