Icelandic Bibliography 1534-1844

    Icelandic Bibliography 1534-1844

On the twentieth anniversary of the National Library of Iceland – University Library, on December 1, 2014, access to the Icelandic bibliography up to 1844 was opened at the website bokaskra.landsbokasafn.is . The history of the bibliography can be traced back to the middle of the last century, when work began at the National Library of Iceland to compile a bibliographic index of all works by Icelandic authors, works by foreign authors printed in Icelandic, and works by foreign authors in foreign languages if they had been printed in Iceland. The first part of the index was to cover the period from 1534 to 1844, or from the beginning of printing in Iceland until the printing press was moved from Viðey to Reykjavík. The index was intended to be published and was worked on until the 1960s, and the result was a complete printing press manuscript. However, the index was never published at that time. In 2005, the National Library of Iceland – University Library began to consider the index again and it was soon decided to publish it digitally online. The index contains a detailed bibliographic description of each publication and the title is written down alphabetically. In addition, most entries have comment sections with various additional information about copies, print variants, decorations, sources and more.
