    Icelandic Folktales and Adventures 1862-1864

    Exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication

    Jón Árnason (1819-1888) compiled and published the collection of folk tales Icelandic Folktales and Adventures in the years 1862-1864. The first volume contains stories of elves, trolls, ghosts and other supernatural beings; of polytheism, animals and natural phenomena. The second volume contains myths, fairy tales, exile stories, superstitions, accounts of real events and parodies. The books immediately became very popular and were important in the growing national identity of Icelanders.

    An exhibition about Jón Árnason's folklore collection was opened on November 24, 2012 at the National Library of Iceland. The National Library of Iceland - University Library's partners in the exhibition are the Árni Magnússon Institute of Icelandic Studies, the National Museum of Iceland, and the National Archives of Iceland.
