Jón Vídalín – a three-century anniversary

    Jón Vídalín – a three-century anniversary

On the occasion of the three-centennial anniversary of the death of Jón Þorkelsson Vídalín (1666 –1720), a micro-exhibition has been set up in the museum. The exhibition includes the works Vídalínspostilla, Sjöorðabókin, Miðvikudagspredikanirnar, Kristindómskverið and Líkpredikun yver Vísa-Gísli Magnússoni. The exhibition also includes transcriptions of three of Vídalín's manuscripts and a newly published two-volume work, a collection of Jón's writings and his biography by Torfi K. Stefánsson Hjaltalín.

Jón Vídalín was an influential theologian. He is best known for the Vídalínspostilla, a home reading apostilla with one sermon for each feast day of the year, intended for reading in homes. The apostilla was one of the most widely read books in Iceland for two centuries and had a significant influence on Icelandic culture, religious life, and literature until the 20th century.

The exhibition runs until December 31st.
