Jónas Hallgrímsson is best known for his poetry, natural science work, and not least his coining of new words.
In 1842, the book Astronomy, Light and for the People was published, which was Jónas Hallgrímsson's translation of the book by the Danish mathematician GF Ursin (1797-1849) Populært Foredrag over Astronomien . The book contains numerous new words by Jónas on various natural phenomena, such as gravity, ellipse, centrifugal force, speed of light, and many more.
