Women's History Archives

Women's History Archives

The Icelandic Women's History Archives was founded on the initiative of Anna Sigurðardóttir, along with Svanlaug Baldursdóttir and Else Mia Einarsdóttir, at Anna's home at Hjarðhagi 26 on January 1, 1975, on the occasion of the United Nations International Women's Year.

The aim of the Icelandic Women's History Archives is to record, preserve and collect sources on women's history, as well as to communicate that knowledge and encourage research. It is the only archive of its kind in Iceland. The archives became a special unit of the National and University Library of Iceland in 1996. It is located on the 1st floor of the library. In the Archives, you can obtain information about women's history and submit documents. The Women's History Archive's materials are lent to the Reading Room of the Iceland National Collection on the 1st floor of the library. You can order materials by calling 525 5779, sending an email to kvennasogusafn@landsbokasafn.is or visiting the site.
