Jón Steffensen Medical Books Collection

Jón Steffensen (1905–1991), professor of anatomy and physiology at the University of Iceland, together with his wife, Kristín Björnsdóttir (1905–1972), bequeathed his entire library to the University Library in 1982. The donation was made, among other things, to promote research into the history of Icelandic health care. The collection contains most publications that have been published on Icelandic health care and writings by Icelandic doctors in foreign languages, along with a number of foreign publications on the history of medicine in general. It also contains many magazines and yearbooks on health care. In addition, the collection contains publications on natural history, travel books, source books on the history of Iceland, ancient works, foreign history, and also Icelandic and foreign fiction.
