National Library of Iceland – University Library 200 years old August 28

The National Library of Iceland – University Library is currently 200 years old, with its official anniversary being August 28. The museum is therefore one of the oldest institutions in the country. The anniversary is celebrated throughout the year and the museum hosts a variety of events, in addition to participating in events marking the 100th anniversary of Iceland's independence.

On the anniversary, the public was specially invited to come and see the museum and its premises, where Örn Hrafnkelsson and Gunnar Marel Hinriksson gave a guided tour of the exhibition The Museum of Times, which discusses the history of the museum. Films were also shown in the lecture hall, one about the National Library on Hverfisgata, which was made by Sjónvarpið in 1968, and the other about the University Library before its transfer to the National Library in 1994.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary, RÚV's television news broadcasts featured interviews with Ingibjörg Steinunn Sverissdóttir, the National Library's curator, see interview , and Bragi Þorgrím Ólafsson, the director of the manuscript collection, see interview , and Fréttablaðið published an interview with Örn Hrafnkelsson, the director of the preservation department, see interview .
