Circulation

All individuals aged 18 and over, with a legal residence in Iceland and an Icelandic ID number, can borrow books from the National Library of Iceland – University Library.

Library card

Library cards are issued at the service desk on the 2nd floor upon presentation of photo ID and social security number. Library cards are included in the tuition fees for students at the University of Iceland and UI employees receive cards free of charge, others pay an annual fee according to the fee schedule .

Password

Borrowers choose a password on lbs.leitir.is. The password is used to register on "my pages" on lbs.leitir.is . Once a borrower has registered, they can renew materials, view their loan history and reserve materials. More information on lbs.leitir.is .

Loan and return

Books and other materials are loaned out at service desks on the 2nd and 4th floors. There is also a self-service machine on the 2nd floor. The loan period is usually 30 days. Some materials are loaned for shorter periods, such as materials in the Course reserve, which is located on the 4th floor. Teachers at the University of Iceland can request that materials in the Course reserve be for use only in the library or loaned for one to seven days. Films are loaned for three days. If the material is not in the library, it can be ordered from another library on interlibrary loan for a fee. Students and employees of the University of Iceland receive a 50% discount on this service. All materials on loan must be returned to the service desk on the 2nd floor.

Loan renewal

Loans can be renewed up to six times if another borrower is not waiting for the material. By logging in to lbs.leitir.is, borrowers can renew their loans. More information at lbs.leitir.is .

Withdrawing material

In order to reserve material, the borrower must be logged in to lbs.leitir.is with their password. More information at lbs.leitir.is .

Material recalls and fines

A reminder of the due date is usually sent to the borrower's email address. However, it is entirely the borrower's responsibility to return the data on time. If data is returned after the loan period expires, daily fines are paid according to the fee schedule . The National Library of Iceland - University Library sends a recall letter twice after the due date. If this recall is unsuccessful, the data is collected by Motus.

Warranty

Library cards are issued to individuals and the cardholder is fully responsible for the materials they borrow. If library materials are lost or damaged in the borrower's custody, they must pay for the value of the materials.
