The Icelandic National Committee for the Memory of the World is advertising for the first nominations for inscription on the Icelandic National Register. The purpose of UNESCO's Memory of the World project, along with the eponymous preservation register, is to draw attention to the world's important documented cultural heritage by designating documented sources (documentary heritage) that have special preservation value.
The National Register of Iceland emphasizes those sources that are important for the entire country. The Árni Magnússon Manuscript Collection in Reykjavík and Copenhagen and the census from 1703, which were included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register as a sign of their importance to the entire world, also belong to the National Register of Iceland. New nominations that receive registration on the National Register could later serve as a catalyst for applications for registration on the UNESCO World Register.
